The Banana Leaf Project Reimagining agricultural waste as the future of sustainable design.

This project tackles the global reliance on plastic and leather by developing versatile bio-materials derived from banana leaves. By capitalizing on India’s status as the top global producer of bananas (accounting for over 25% of world production), the project utilizes abundant local resources to minimize carbon footprints. The research resulted in various material iterations—from opaque to transparent, proving that eco-friendly alternatives can be both functional and scalable.

Material Innovation & Application: Successfully synthesized four distinct bio-material variations using 100% natural household waste (glycerin and gelatin-free). The project focused on scaling two primary textures: Opaque (Leather alternative) and Transparent (Plastic alternative).

The Prototype: Zero-Waste Grocery Bag A fully circular solution designed to replace plastic and synthetic leather bags.

Expanding a futuristic scope from packaging to architecture, A modular 4x4 grid (2m spacing) serves as a permanent skeleton, enabling infinite permutations of the bio-material "skin."

The Experience: Leveraging the material's biodegradability, the structure is designed to be temporary. This creates a rotating artist residency, where the grid serves as a blank canvas for local creators to install new designs periodically, keeping the urban space dynamic and culturally relevant.
